CRCST stands for Certified Registered Central Service Technician. It is the entry-level certification for sterile processing technicians, issued by HSPA, the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).
A CRCST has passed HSPA's exam and completed 400 hours of hands-on work in a sterile processing department. The credential has to be renewed every year. If you're thinking of earning it, the free 25-question CRCST diagnostic shows how much of the exam you already know.

What "central service" means
"Central service" is another name for sterile processing, the hospital department that reprocesses instruments between patients. HSPA treats "central service technician" and "sterile processing technician" as the same job (HSPA legislative page). You will also see the department called CS, central sterile or SPD (sterile processing department).
So a CRCST is a certified sterile processing technician. The words "central service" don't mean a different role.
Full CRCST and provisional CRCST
There are two ways to hold the credential:
- CRCST: you passed the exam and HSPA has accepted your 400 hours.
- Provisional CRCST: you passed the exam before finishing the hours. You have six months to submit them, with one possible 2-month extension, or you lose the credential and must retake the exam.
HSPA's handbook lets holders use "CRCST" or "Certified Registered Central Service Technician" after their name, and "Provisional CRCST" during the provisional period. You may use the letters only while the certification is current, and only after HSPA confirms in writing that you passed. Our 400 hours guide covers the provisional deadline.
Other letters you will see
- CSPDT: Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician, from CBSPD, the other technician board
- CIS: Certified Instrument Specialist (HSPA)
- CER: Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (HSPA)
- CHL: Certified Healthcare Leader (HSPA)
- IAHCSMM: HSPA's former name
The CIS and CHL both require a current CRCST. See HSPA certification for how they fit together, and CRCST vs CBSPD for the CSPDT.

Frequently asked questions
What does CRCST stand for?
CRCST stands for Certified Registered Central Service Technician. It is HSPA's entry-level certification for sterile processing technicians, who clean, inspect, package and sterilize reusable surgical instruments.
Who gives the CRCST certification?
HSPA, the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association, gives the CRCST. HSPA was called IAHCSMM until it adopted its current name in 2022. The exam is delivered at Prometric test centers.
Is a CRCST the same as a sterile processing technician?
A CRCST is a sterile processing technician who holds HSPA's certification. HSPA treats "central service technician" and "sterile processing technician" as the same job. Not every sterile processing tech is certified, and some hold CBSPD's CSPDT instead.
What is a provisional CRCST?
A provisional CRCST has passed the exam but has not yet submitted the 400 hands-on hours. HSPA gives six months to submit them, with one possible 2-month extension for people working or volunteering in a department.
Is the CRCST the same as the CSPDT?
No. The CRCST comes from HSPA and the CSPDT from CBSPD. Both are technician certifications with 150-question exams, but they differ in eligibility and renewal. Six of the seven state certification laws accept either one.
How long does a CRCST last?
One year at a time. HSPA certifications are renewed every year by submitting 12 CE credits and a $50 fee by the last day of your anniversary month.
